PHOENIX, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- An inmate considered extremely dangerous who escaped from the Maricopa County jail's psychiatric unit in Phoenix Sunday was recaptured, authorities said.

Phoenix TV stations KNXV and KPHO reported the sheriff's department said Adan Orduno Jr. was back in custody but details of his apprehension were not provided.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said it wasn't known how the 26-year-old inmate got out of his cell unnoticed despite guards walking by every 15 minutes, The Arizona Republic reported.

The jail was placed on lockdown after Orduno's absence was noticed shortly before 9 a.m. local time, and deputies were searching the facility and surrounding area, the sheriff said.

Police blocked traffic and used dogs in the search for the fugitive, described as a 5-foot-7, 130-pound Hispanic with dark hair and brown eyes. Authorities didn't know if he was wearing his jail-issued, black-and-white striped clothes or had shed them, the newspaper said.

Orduno, who possibly has gang ties, had been in custody since being arrested Nov. 4, 2011, by Phoenix police for attempted murder, drive-by shooting, armed robbery, theft, four counts of aggravated assault, weapons misconduct and unlawful flight from law enforcement. Court records show he has an extensive crime history, the Republic said.

He is suspected in an Oct. 28, 2011, armed robbery of a Phoenix jewelry store and officer-involved shooting.
