McConnell: Bottom line is no tax increases

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Republicans are not going to "roll over" and agree to tax increases, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said.

McConnell took his stand in a statement released Thursday to Breitbart News.

"One issue I've never been conflicted about is taxes," McConnell said. "I wasn't sent to Washington to raise anybody's taxes to pay for more wasteful spending, and this election doesn't change my principles."

McConnell said the election did not really change anything, leaving Republicans in control of the House and with a "robust minority" in the Senate.

"I know some people out there think Tuesday's results mean Republicans in Washington are now going to roll over and agree to Democrat demands that we hike tax rates before the end of the year," McConnell said. "I'm here to tell them there is no truth to that notion whatsoever."

President Obama has called a White House meeting with congressional leaders next week to discuss deficit reduction. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, strategist for Senate Democrats, has suggested Republicans might be less intransigent given Democrats' success in Tuesday's elections.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said he would support tax code changes that increase revenue but only those involving closing loopholes and not an increase in rates.
