UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- U.N. food relief workers are seeking to raise $74 million over the next year to help Haitian farmers recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said Tuesday the storm caused significant damage to the country's already meager farming and livestock sectors. Sandy is the third natural disaster to strike the struggling nation. A severe drought was reported earlier this year and tropical storm Isaac battered the island, displacing thousands.
"The recent natural disasters in Haiti require the robust response of the international community to support ongoing government efforts," said the U.N. food and agriculture organization's senior emergency coordinator in Haiti, Adam Yao.
Of the aid, $4 million is being sought immediately to help farmers get through the winter with the rest going toward crop and livestock replacement.
