RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- North Carolina gave Mitt Romney 15 electoral votes and elected its first GOP governor in 24 years, but President Obama won a second term, results showed.
Pat McCrory, a former Charlotte, N.C., mayor, became the first Republican since 1988 to be elected governor of North Carolina, ABC News reported.
Meanwhile, CNN reported Romney captured 51 percent of the vote in the state to 48 percent for Obama with about 99 percent of votes in, CNN reported.
In the governor's race, McCrory defeated Democrat Walter Dalton, the state's lieutenant governor.
Gov. Beverly Perdue, who edged McCrory in 2008, did not seek a second term.
The Charlotte Observer reported McCrory had said Dalton conceded in a telephone call Tuesday evening.
Speaking of the end of the Democrats' hold on the governor's seat, McCrory said, "It can happen -- the curse is over."
The Raleigh News & Observer noted Republicans had taken the statehouse two years ago and with McCrory's victory will gain full control of lawmaking in the state for the first time since the 1880s.
