WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The race for the White House between U.S. President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney remains neck-and-neck, a Washington Post-ABC News poll indicated.
Forty-nine percent of likely voters said they back Obama and 48 percent said they support Romney, results released Thursday indicated.
Romney and Obama are also close when likely voters identified who they trust to deal with the nation's struggling economy -- 49 percent said they have more faith in Romney while 47 percent said they think Obama would do a better job.
Results indicated one in five voters said they were "very confident" the economy will improve quickly no matter who wins the presidency.
Fifty-four percent of likely voters said they thought the economy would get back on track in the next year or two if Romney wins and 47 percent said the same for Obama.
Results are based on nationwide interviews with 1,293 likely voters Sunday through Tuesday. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
