DETROIT, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The trial of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been suspended because a lawyer is sick, the federal judge hearing the case said.
Gerald Evelyn, who represents Bobby Ferguson, a longtime Kilpatrick friend and city contractor, became sick in court Monday, the Detroit News reported.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds set Nov. 13 as the most realistic date for resuming the trial, after meeting briefly with the other lawyers in her chambers, although she said Evelyn might recover sooner.
"He is recovering, but slowly. He's weak and needs rest," Edmunds said. "He is on some medication that he is adjusting to, and it will take a little while to get up to full speed."
Kilpatrick, his father, Bernard, Ferguson and the former director of the city water department are charged with bribery and corruption.
