Justice Dept. to monitor Miami voting

Nov. 2, 2012 at 2:17 PM   |   Comments

MIAMI, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Portions of early voting for Miami and Dade County will be monitored to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act, the Justice Department said Friday.

Justice Department personnel will monitor polling place activities and attorneys from its Civil Rights Division will coordinate federal functions and maintain contact with local election officials, the department said in a release.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibits discrimination in the election process based on race, color or membership in a minority language group.

The Justice Department previously announced it would be monitoring early voting for the general election in Dallas and Harris Counties in Texas.
