DETROIT, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Testimony in the Detroit City Hall federal corruption trial was halted Monday when defense lawyer Gerald Evelyn became ill and was hospitalized.

Evelyn, 60, was stricken with an unknown medical emergency during cross-examination of a witness and was taken from U.S. District Court on a stretcher just before noon, The Detroit News reported.

Evelyn requested a break from Judge Nancy Edmunds, then returned to his chair and put his head on the table. A courthouse nurse was brought in, as was a wheelchair, the newspaper said.

He is the defense attorney of contractor Bobby Ferguson, who with former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, ex-city water department chief Victor Mercado and Kilpatrick's father Bernard Kilpatrick, is accused of running a criminal enterprise through the mayor's office to enrich himself. The trial is in its 23rd day.
