NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A New York City nanny who allegedly killed two children in her care before attempting to commit suicide woke up in a hospital and asked about her own family.

Yoselyn Ortega, who allegedly killed 6-year-old Lucia and 2-year-old Leo Krim, awoke Sunday and spoke for the first time since the Thursday slayings, the New York Post reported.

Ortega underwent surgery and is "talking a little," an official said. She has only spoken to her lawyer, however, and "asked about her family," the official said.

The dead children's mother, Marina Linsley Krim, planned on meeting Ortega, Lucia and Leo, at the Kaufman dance studio around 5 p.m. Thursday for Lucia's dance class but the three did not show up.

When Krim returned home shortly after 5:30 p.m., she found Ortega stabbing herself in the throat and the children dead in the bathroom.

Ortega remained intubated Saturday, police spokesman Paul Browne said.
