Roadside sniper strikes again in Michigan

FOWLERVILLE, Mich., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Two more roadside sniper shootings occurred in Michigan Saturday, including one in which a man on his way to the World Series was wounded, police said.

Investigators said multiple bullet casings were recovered from the scenes of both shootings, Detroit's WXYZ-TV, reported. The shooter was not found, police said.

The latest shootings along Interstate 96 in Fowlerville bring to two dozen the number of recent shootings along the highway.

The first shooting occurred about 11:50 a.m. when a car carrying an 18-year-old man from Canton and his 18-year-old girlfriend from Plymouth was fired on while the couple were driving eastbound about a mile west of the Fowlerville exit. The bullet hit the driver's side rear window and exited out the passenger's side rear window. Neither occupant was injured.

The TV station said about a half hour later, another vehicle traveling eastbound on I-96 between the Ingham County line and the Fowlerville Road exit was hit in the driver's side door. The driver, a 46-year-old man from Delton who was alone in the car, was hit in the left buttock.

WXYZ-TV said employees at a service station where the wounded man drove after the shooting said he refused their help, saying he wanted to continue on to the World Series in Detroit where the Tigers were playing Game 3 against San Francisco. Eventually, he was treated by an ambulance crew at the scene and taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital of Livingston where he was listed in stable condition.

Michigan police have said forensic evidence linked several of the 22 previous shootings that took place between Ann Arbor and Detroit Oct. 16-18 to a single roadside sniper.
