Biden campaigns in Virginia

LYNCHBURG, Va., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden, appearing in Lynchburg, Va., told supporters Saturday that President Obama is the champion of the U.S. middle class.

Biden, speaking in a gym at the Lynchburg City Armory, attacked Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for shifting positions on many issues and accused him of catering to the very rich.

Someone had set the scoreboard so that both the Home and Guests slots showed the number 47, a reminder of Romney's remark to donors, secretly taped several months ago, about the 47 percent of U.S. voters who do not pay federal income taxes.

Hurricane Sandy, forecast to hit the mid-Atlantic region Sunday, caused some changes to Biden's schedule. A stop in Virginia Beach set for Saturday morning was canceled Friday and the vice president's son, Beau, headed home to Delaware, where he is both attorney general and a member of the National Guard.

Obama ran more than 6 percentage points ahead of U.S. Sen. John McCain in Virginia in 2008. This year, the state is considered a tossup.

"We win Virginia, we win this election," Biden said as he wound down.
