WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- President Obama picked up support to tie Republican rival Mitt Romney going into the final debate, a United Press International poll released Tuesday indicated.

The candidates were in a 48 percent tie heading into Monday's debate. Obama had trailed his GOP challenger much of the time after the first presidential debate three weeks ago in Denver, results of the UPI-CVoter poll indicated.

The poll of likely voters was conducted before the final presidential faceoff in Boca Raton, Fla., indicating Obama was recovering ground lost after the first debate, which pundits generally agree Romney won.

Fifty-one percent of adults said they approved Obama's performance as president while 44 percent disapproved, results indicated.

Results are based on a nationwide telephone survey conducted Oct. 16-22 of 1,421 adults, of which 1,162 identified themselves as likely to vote in the Nov. 6 election. The margin of error for the overall sample is 3.5 percentage points and the 4.5 percent for the sample of likely voters.
