Randy W. Tundidor, 45, of Plantation was found guilty in May by the same jury of 10 charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, armed kidnapping, burglary and arson, The Miami Herald reported.
In 2010, Tundidor stabbed Nova Southeastern University professor Joseph Morrissey, 46, to death and then setting his house on fire while his wife, Linda Morrissey, and young son Patrick, then 5, remained inside.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Tundidor could also be sentenced to life in prison instead.
Testimony could last two days before the jury considers its recommendation. Broward Circuit Judge Cynthia Imperato will have the final say on Tundidor's punishment though judges rarely overrule a jury's decision.
