CHICAGO, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A lawyer representing a bartender in her lawsuit against a Chicago police officer who attacked her said Monday other officers tried to cover up the beating.
Karolina Obrycka is suing Chicago police officer Anthony Abbate and the city of Chicago for the beating that occurred six years ago.
Abbate was convicted in 2009 of aggravated battery and sentenced to probation for throwing Obrycka against a wall and then repeatedly punching and kicking her because she refused to serve him more alcohol. A video of the attack was posted on the Internet and went viral.
After the U.S. District Court jury was selected, plaintiff's attorney Terry Ekl warned the jurors during his opening statement about the "graphic and brutal" nature of the video before playing it for them.
He then went on to talk about "a code of silence" as he alleged that other Chicago police officers had attempted to cover up the beating to protect Abbate.
A spokesman for the city's Law Department declined to discuss the civil case.
