MIAMI, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A car racing on a Miami street collided with a sport utility vehicle carrying a family, killing three people and injuring three others, authorities said.

The incident happened early Saturday when a Toyota Scion was drag racing with two other vehicles and collided head-on with a Ford Expedition, The Miami Herald reported.

Jose Serrano, 43, who was driving the Expedition, and his 15-year-old son, German, died in the crash, police said. Serrano's wife, Carmen Orta, and 12-year-old son Gabriel, were in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

The driver of the Scion, identified as 19-year-old Alejandro Hernandez, was thrown from the car and was in critical condition at Ryder, police said. His passenger, Ivan Rodriguez Jr., 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators were searching for the two other cars involved in the drag race.
