HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Police officers arrested a third party candidate and her running mate for trying to enter the debate hall at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

Green Party presidential nominee Dr. Jill Stein and vice presidential nominee Cheri Honkala spent 20 minutes attempting to gain entry to the building where the second U.S. presidential debate was held Tuesday night, Politico reported.

The two women were arrested when they sat down in the street and refused to move, the Long Island Report said.

"The American people deserve to hear choices which are not bought and paid for by multinational corporations and Wall Street," Stein said. "This is why we are not hearing the critical issues in this debate."

A campaign release said Stein's Green Party ticket will be on an estimated 85 percent of ballots next month.

However, the non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates stipulates a candidate must garner 15 percent in national polls to participate in debates.
