MIAMI, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The Miccosukee tribe, which operates a Miami-area casino, has been ordered to turn over financial records to the Internal Revenue Service.
A federal appellate court agreed with a district judge who said the tribe may be a sovereign nation but has to bow to a "superior sovereign" when it comes to tribal members' taxes, The Miami Herald reported.
The IRS says individual Miccosukee may owe tens of millions of dollars in taxes on casino profits distributed to them as members of the tribe.
The tribe has about 600 members who annually get $120,000 to $160,000 each from the casino. The government says the tribe did not withhold taxes from the payments and members failed to pay required income taxes.
The legal fight has been raging since 2005. The casino itself does not have to pay taxes because of the Miccosukee status as a "sovereign nation."
