OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A homeless man helped a panicked mother deliver her baby at an Oklahoma rest stop and quite likely saved the child's life, witnesses said.

Keaton Mason and her finacee were driving on I-40 Thursday in Oklahoma City when Mason went into labor a month before her due date. Panicked, she called 911 and after birthing the baby, frantically said her newborn wasn't breathing.

The umbilical cord had become wrapped around the infant's neck and she was turning blue.

That's when Gary Wilson stepped in to help.

A paramedic who arrived on scene later told KOTV, Oklahoma City, the hitchhiker did everything perfectly. He unwrapped the cord, tied it and rubbed the baby's back until she began breathing.

Witnesses told the TV station Wilson, who said he was from Montana and was headed to Jacksonville, Fla., was perfectly calm in saving the baby. Rest stop employees offered him a hot meal and a place to stay for the night and Wilson left the following morning.

Mason and her newborn daughter are both fine.
