Agents arrest daughter of drug kingpin

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The daughter of a wanted Mexican drug lord has gone before a federal court on charges she tried to enter the United States using false documents, officials say.

Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman Salazar was arrested Friday afternoon at the San Ysidro port of entry after a customs officer said her documents belonged to another person, the Los Angeles Times reported.

She later admitted she was the daughter of Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman, the leader of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel. Guzman Salazar said she was traveling to Los Angeles to give birth, said a customs official.

In a hearing Monday at the San Diego federal courthouse, her attorneys did not comment on whether she was related to the drug kingpin. They said their client was a medical doctor from Guadalajara who was seven months pregnant.

In 2011, Guzman's wife entered the United States to give birth to twins in Los Angeles. She was not detained because she is a U.S. citizen and did not have any warrants against her.

Guzman Salazar, the woman arrested Friday, was held without bond. Her next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25.
