Witness: Kilpatrick Civic Fund misused

DETROIT, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Money from the Kilpatrick Civic Fund paid for summer camp for Kwame Kilpatrick's children, an aide to the former Detroit mayor said Thursday.

April Edgar, who was Kilpatrick's scheduler, testified on the 13th day of his corruption trial. Edgar is also the half-sister of Christine Beatty, who was Kilpatrick's chief of staff and mistress.

The civic fund was supposed to be used for programs for Detroit children and for voter education, Edgar said. But she said much of the money went to Kilpatrick's family. The fund also paid $15,000 for Kilpatrick's moving expenses when he left office after admitting perjury.

Kilpatrick, his father, Bernard, Bobby Ferguson, a longtime Kilpatrick friend and city contractor, and Victor Mercado, former head of the Detroit water department, are on trial on corruption charges.
