Poll finds Romney gaining in Michigan

DETROIT, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A new poll suggests President Barack Obama's once significant lead over Mitt Romney in Michigan may be slipping.

A survey conducted in the state in the days after the first of three debates held between the two presidential candidates showed a sharp drop in support for Obama, though the poll still finds him with a sizable lead in the state.

The poll, commissioned by the Detroit News and WDIV-TV, Detroit, found Obama leading Romney by 6.7 percentage points, 49 percent to 42.3 percent. That lead has narrowed significantly from a 14.2 percent lead the survey prior to a debate even Obama has admitted didn't go the way he'd hoped.

"All the gains through September were wiped away in one night of the debate," said Richard Czuba of Glengariff Group Inc., which conducted the poll Saturday through Monday.

Three out of four voters said they watched all or some of the debate closely, with 66 percent saying they thought Romney was the winner.

The survey reached 600 likely voters with live phone interviews, 20 percent by cellphone. A margin of error was not reported.
