HOUSTON, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Ten members of a Texas college marching band were suspended for a semester after the school confirmed a hazing incident had taken place.
Officials at Texas Southern University placed the upperclassmen on suspension until Dec. 31 and revoked band scholarships after it was confirmed they had paddled freshmen members of the trumpet section. The freshmen were also reprimanded but were not suspended and were allowed to keep their scholarships, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Hazing and failing to report hazing are criminal offenses in Texas, though TSU spokeswoman Eva Pickens said the school would not pursue charging the bandmates.
The remaining 190 or so members of the Ocean of Soul marching band will have to undergo anti-hazing seminars and will not be permitted to perform in a Thanksgiving Day parade or a 2013 battle of the bands competition it had been scheduled to enter, the newspaper reported.
