CHICAGO, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Chicago police Wednesday were investigating the shooting death of a Canadian truck driver found dead in the cab of his truck in the city's South Side.
Police said robbery was the apparent motive, but an autopsy was scheduled to determine what happened to 39-year-old Gary Clarke, the Chicago Tribune reported.
It wasn't revealed what brought police to his freight truck parked in a vacant lot near the home of his brother about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, but officers found him lifeless in the truck.
Clarke had been shot in the right hip and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, the newspaper said.
The trucker worked for the Canadian firm Aberstar Fast Freight based in Ontario and reportedly had just dropped off a shipment. He was scheduled to depart for another run Wednesday morning, the Tribune said.
Police statistics indicate the Englewood neighborhood where Clarke was killed had 86 reports of violent crime in the last month, one of the highest rates in all of the Chicago metropolitan area.
