Felony charges reinstated against priest

Oct. 3, 2012 at 1:55 PM

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia judge reinstated felony charges against a Catholic priest accused of forcing a 10-year-old altar boy to perform oral sex.

Common Pleas Judge Paula Patrick said the Rev. Andrew McCormick will stand trial for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault and statutory sexual assault, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Tuesday. A lower court judge had dropped the charges made by a now-24-year-old man who says McCormick abused him in 1997 in the rectory of St. John Cantius Church in Bridesburg where McCormick was the presiding priest.

He also faces misdemeanor charges of indecent assault, corrupting the morals of a minor and endangering the welfare of a child, the newspaper said.

McCormick was put on leave by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in March 2011 and remains free on bail.
