PRINCETON, N.J., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- More Americans say they think President Obama is better for middle-income wage earners than Republican rival Mitt Romney, a USA Today-Gallup poll indicated.

Fifty-three percent of Americans said they think middle-income wage earners will be better off in four years if Obama is re-elected while 43 percent said Romney would better benefit those earners, results released Monday indicated.

A majority of respondents also said lower-income Americans would be better off under an Obama presidency, results indicated. A majority said upper income households would fare better under Romney.

Anywhere from 53 percent to 67 percent among racial and ethnic minorities, women, young adults and senior citizens said they would be better off under Obama, while less than half said Romney, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.

Investors and men would fare better under a Romney presidency, results indicated.

Americans were evenly split about which candidate would be better for small-business owners.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,446 adults conducted Sept. 24-27. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
