PHOENIX, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Fox News Friday apologized for its live broadcast of a Phoenix-area car chase that ended with a suicide.

Host Shep Smith said the network "really messed up" and apologized for failing to cut away from the live shot when the suspect in the car chase exited his vehicle, ran several yards, then put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, falling down lifeless.

"We really messed up, and we are all really sorry. That didn't belong on TV. I personally apologize to you that that happened. That will not happen again on my watch, and I am sorry," Smith said, explaining the 5-second delay the network established to avoid such an incident clearly failed.

Smith urgently pleaded with his crew to cut away from the scene once he realized what was happening, saying repeatedly, "Get, off, get off, get off," before it was too late.
