In an interview on "CBS This Morning," McCain said statements by members of the Obama administration show they do not understand what is happening in the Muslim world. He said the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three staff members was clearly the work of an organized group.
McCain, R-Ariz., is the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
"And so I can't say exactly, but it's clear that there is a connection between these people, and to say that it was a spontaneous demonstration is really beyond belief," McCain said. "It shows a fundamental misunderstanding, not only of warfare but of what's going on in that part of the world."
McCain said that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney should put more emphasis on foreign policy in his campaign.
