NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- A former local official in the New Orleans area said he has gone from "dragon slayer" to "dragon" as he pleaded guilty Tuesday to corruption charges.

Aaron Broussard, 63, former president of Jefferson Parish, admitted hiring his girlfriend for a no-show job, The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported. He pleaded guilty to a second charge of stealing $28,000, the excess salary she was paid during one year of the six she held the position.

"At 23, I came into politics as a dragon slayer," Broussard told reporters before the hearing. "At 63 years old, I'm going out as the dragon."

Broussard and Tom Wilkinson, the former Jefferson Parish attorney, are scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 25.
