JOLIET, Ill., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- A member of Drew Peterson's defense team has quit, the second since the former Illinois police officer was convicted of murdering one of his wives.
Joseph Lopez and Ralph Meczyk, two of Peterson's remaining lawyers, confirmed the departure of Darryl Goldberg, the Chicago Tribune reported. Goldberg, who often stayed away from his colleagues' news conferences, specialized in the scientific and medical evidence in Peterson's trial for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
Lopez told the Tribune Monday there appears to be feuding going on among some other lawyers.
Steve Greenberg, who was fired soon after the verdict, and Joel Brodsky, Peterson's lead lawyer, have been involved in an open battle, the Tribune said. Brodsky posted a statement on line that said Greenberg failed to make timely objections during the trial, while Greenberg threatened legal action against Brodsky for "false and defamatory" comments Brodsky posted to Facebook.
Savio, who was divorced from Peterson, was found dead in her bathtub in 2004. The death was ruled an accident but the case was reopened after Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy, vanished in 2007.
Peterson was a member of the police department in Bolingbrook, Ill., for 30 years.
