RNC chief: Mitt offers economic specifics

Sept. 23, 2012 at 12:36 PM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The chairman of the Republican Party said despite what critics say, presidential nominee Mitt Romney has been specific about his strategy for the U.S. economy.

Reince Priebus said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday Romney had called for specific reductions in various taxes and overall government spending, and had even named leading congressional budget hawk Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., as his running mate.

"For crying out loud, we've got Paul Ryan on the ticket," Priebus said. "There can't be anything more specific than a budget that we passed to get a hold of the 10-year debt window, the deficits that are out of control that the president promised that he would fix."

Priebus also discounted criticism that Romney's campaign had bogged down amid a lack of the specifics that voters were looking for. "We've got specifics coming out of our eyeballs," he said. "I just think that we need to keep pounding away on those specifics and keep talking about those specifics."

David Axelrod, senior adviser to President Obama, argued Romney's specific plans were nothing more than touting trickle-down economics and ignoring slow but steady job growth. "I don't think the problem has been that they haven't attacked the president enough," he told ABC. "It's not about them tearing down the president. They simply haven't offered ideas about how they're going to lift up the country."
