Poll: Dems getting more excited

Sept. 20, 2012 at 10:40 AM   |   Comments

PRINCETON, N.J., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Enthusiasm among Democratic U.S. voters has jumped in 12 swing states and nationally, results of a Gallup poll released Thursday indicate.

Overall, 59 percent of voters in swing states -- Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin -- said they were either "extremely" or "very" enthusiastic now, a jump from 46 percent in June, the USA Today-Gallup survey indicated.

Gallup said Democrats in swing states were significantly more enthusiastic now than Republicans, 73 percent compared with 64 percent. Equal percentages of Democrats and Republicans were enthusiastic in June, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.

Nationwide, 55 percent of U.S. registered voters said they were either extremely or very enthusiastic about voting in the 2012 election, up from 43 percent in June, Gallup said. The figure included a 19-percentage-point increase among Democrats and nearly 10-point increases among independents and Republicans.

Swing-state results are based on Gallup Daily tracking from Sept. 11-17 with 1,096 registered voters in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

National results are based on interviews with 954 registered voters conducted as part of Gallup Daily tracking Sunday and Monday. A margin of error was not provided.
