Colo.'s Chimney Rock a national monument

DENVER, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Chimney Rock in western Colorado's San Juan National Forest has been selected as a national monument, officials said.

President Barack Obama will make his third designation under the Antiquities Act Friday in designating the 4,726-acre archeological site as a national monument, administration officials told The Denver Post Wednesday.

The site, a spiritual place for the Pueblo and other tribes, will be managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Forest Service, the newspaper said.

"Making Chimney Rock a national monument will be an extraordinary boost for the region by preserving and protecting the site and driving tourism, which would draw more visitors and bring more dollars into the local, regional and state economies," said Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo.
