WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Almost half the Hispanics in the United States live in 10 metropolitan areas, with one in five in either Los Angeles or New York, a study issued Wednesday said.
The report, "Characteristics of the 60 Largest Metropolitan Areas by Hispanic Population," was written by Seth Motel and Eileen Patten, research assistants, Pew Hispanic Center.
More than three-quarters, 76 percent, of the U.S. Hispanic population lives in the 60 metropolitan areas, the report said, with 45 percent in the Top 10 areas. There are 5.7 million Hispanics in the Los Angeles area, about 11 percent of the U.S. total, and 4.2 million or 8 percent in the New York-North Jersey area.
Thirteen metropolitan areas are now a majority Hispanic, and two in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas -- Laredo and McAllen -- are 90 percent Hispanic.
About 65 percent of the Hispanic population is from Mexico or of Mexican descent, and Mexican-Americans are the largest group of Hispanics in 50 metropolitan areas. But Cubans are the largest group in Miami, Salvadorans in Washington and Puerto Ricans in New York and Philadelphia-South Jersey.
