MEMPHIS, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A Memphis police officer was charged with prostitution and sex trafficking after investigators said he was running a prostitution ring.

Sean McWhirter, 30, a patrol officer for the Memphis Police Department, was caught in an undercover sting offering an FBI informant the chance to buy sex with the women.

After tapping his cellphone, agents found McWhirter regularly discussing his prostitution business. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported McWhirter shuttled the women across state lines from Memphis to Tunica, Miss.

McWhirter was placed on paid leave. If convicted he faces a maximum 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
