SAN MARCOS, Calif., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A sheriff's deputy in San Marcos, Calif., struck and killed a pedestrian while pursuing a suspected drunken driver Tuesday, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

The deputy had just started chasing a vehicle he spotted driving erratically and had not yet activated his emergency lights, when a man "stepped right out in front of him," spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.
