CULLMAN, Ala., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A Tennessee couple was killed in a private plane crash in Alabama, en route home from Florida, authorities said.

The single-engine plane piloted by Gary Cohen crashed Monday afternoon in a pasture in northern Alabama, where severe weather was reported, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Tuesday.

Cohen, an orthodontist, and his wife Nancy, a pharmacist, were killed, the couple's pastor confirmed.

The plane took off from Destin, Fla., and issued a mayday call when it encountered bad weather, officials said.

The Cullman, Ala., Times reported Federal Aviation Administration investigators arrived on the scene within two hours of the accident, and that an official of the National Transportation Safety Board would visit Tuesday.
