BELLAFONTE, Pa., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach convicted of sexually abusing young boys for years, will be sentenced Oct. 9.

Judge John M. Cleland, who scheduled the sentencing hearing Monday, also will hold a hearing to determine if Sandusky is a sexually violent predator immediately before determining his punishment.

Sandusky was found guilty in June on 45 counts charging him with abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. The scandal erupted last November when Sandusky was arrested and led to the firing of head Coach Joe Paterno, who died of cancer two months later. It also led to severe sanctions against the Penn State football program.

Cleland also ordered attorneys in the case to submit statements relating to the sentencing by Oct. 5. Attorneys for both sides will meet with the judge Oct. 8.
