NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The Occupy Wall Street protest marked its first anniversary Sunday with a noisy outburst in New York's Lower Manhattan.

A cadre of police stood by at Zuccotti Park in the wake of multiple arrests made during a noisy demonstration at the same site the previous day.

CNN said the protesters issued a statement Sunday calling the latest incidents an example of "flexing people power in the streets."

"The Occupy movement continues to utilize culturally creative tactics to build the movement for social and economic justice," the statement said.

The exercise Saturday night ended in a confrontation between police and about 250 people who marched down Broadway chanting "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out," and "We are the 99 percent."

Witnesses told The New York Times police more than once moved into the crowd to arrest specific individuals for reasons that were not immediately known. The newspaper said about 15 people were detained.
