UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Prosecutors Friday demanded conditions be placed on releasing a former Khmer Rouge official declared unfit to stand trial for crimes against humanity.
The United Nations-backed Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia said Thursday that Ieng Thirith -- who was on trial with her husband and other Khmer Rouge leaders for genocide and other crimes against humanity -- should be released unconditionally, a U.N. press statement Friday said.
The statement said Thirith was examined by psychiatrists last year and found to have clinical dementia, most likely Alzheimer's disease.
The prosecutors asked that "limited, reasonably necessary and proportionate" restrictions be placed on her liberty to prevent her from fleeing the court's jurisdiction or interfere with other witnesses.
