MIAMI, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Tropical storm Nadine strengthened Friday to become the eighth hurricane of the Atlantic season, U.S. forecasters said.

Nadine was about 725 miles east of Bermuda and 1,570 miles west-southwest of the Azores. The hurricane was moving north-northeast at 14 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 11 p.m. EDT advisory.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect for the Category 1 hurricane, which was expected to turn northeast Saturday and accelerate to the east Saturday night and Sunday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kristy was slowly weakening in the Pacific Ocean 275 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.

Maximum sustained winds had slowed to 45 mph with higher gust. Swells from Kristy will affect the southwest Mexican coast and southern Baja California over the next couple of days as the storm slowly weakens, forecasters said.
