JUNEAU, Alaska, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The Coast Guard rescued two stranded fishermen whose boat sank 25 miles off the coast of southern Alaska.
The men were fishing in their 28-foot vessel, the Kaitlin Rai, Friday when the boat sank. One of the men was able to climb into a fishing tote. The other man was adrift in the water, but located a survival suit and was able to put it on and eventually swim to shore.
The men were overdue in Port Edgecumbe and reported missing. A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter crew was dispatched Friday night but didn't locate the men before night fell. The following morning the Coast Guard and Alaska state troopers resumed the search and troopers aboard a ship patrolling the shoreline spotted the fisherman in the survival suit.
The man floating in the fishing tote was located about two hours later by the crew of another fishing boat that had joined the search.
Both men were in stable condition when they were transported for medical treatment, the Coast Guard said.
