LAFAYETTE, Ind., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- An anti-abortion activist says a Planned Parenthood clinic in Lafayette, Ind., is performing abortions by prescribing the morning after pill.

Planned Parenthood officials say the clinic is complying with Indiana laws and does not need to be licensed to perform abortions simply because women can receive Mifepristone there, the Indianapolis Star reported. The drug prevents a fertilized egg from being implanted in the uterus.

"The Lafayette facility is not licensed as a medical facility or regulated to perform abortions as required by Indiana law," said Sue Swayze, legislative director of Indiana Right to Life.

Betty Cockrum, state president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana, said the clinics that perform surgical abortions are licensed by the state.

Swayze said she learned only recently that Planned Parenthood reports terminations using the morning after pill as abortions.

"Planned Parenthood considers them abortions," Swayze said. "If this dangerous practice is going on in an unlicensed facility, women and the community need to know."
