WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama and the Democratic National Committee took in more than their Republican counterparts for the first time in a quarter, data indicated.

Obama collected $114 million in August, while challenger Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee took in more than $111 million, Politico reported Monday.

Obama's campaign said the average donation for August was $58 and 98 percent of the donations were $250 or less.

Romney for President, Romney Victory, and the RNC said they raised $111.6 million in August, Romney's campaign said.

His campaign, the national committee and state party participants have about $168.5 million cash on hand.

Obama's campaign did not release cash-on-hand totals, Politico said.

Romney's campaign said slightly more than 94 percent of all donations received in August were $250 or less.
