MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Two young children allegedly abducted by their father were rescued from a sailboat off California's Monterey Peninsula Friday, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the father, Christopher Maffei, 43, was taken into custody after the 41-foot sailboat Unleashed was intercepted between Pillar Point and Monterey, CNN reported.
Police said Maffei is accused of taking his 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son from the South San Francisco home of their mother, Jennifer Hipon, on Tuesday, the news network said.
Maffei's rental car was found Wednesday in a parking lot of a marina from which the sailboat had been stolen, police said.
South San Francisco police said it appeared there was a custody dispute of some sort going on between Maffei and Hipon.
