Trayvon Martin school records sought

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Lawyers for George Zimmerman, the Florida man charged with killing an unarmed black teenager, say they want access to Trayvon Martin's school records.

In a post on their Web site, the defense lawyers said they have issued subpoenas for disciplinary records, grades, attendance and tardiness, and awards given to Martin, the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday. The subpoenas have been sent to the schools Martin attended going back to middle school.

Zimmerman, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer who kept following Martin after a police dispatcher told him to back off, has been charged with second-degree murder. He has admitted killing Martin on Feb. 26 but says the teen jumped him and he felt his life was in danger.

Martin was staying with his father's girlfriend in a gated community in Sanford after being suspended from school in Miami for possession of an empty bag that had been used for marijuana.
