Police seize suspected cockfighting birds

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Los Angeles police seized nearly 100 chickens, and bottles of hormones, in what they suspect is evidence of an illegal cockfighting operation.

The raid came after reports of cockfighting at an address in the Willowbrook area, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday, adding no one was arrested, but several people were detained and questioned.

The backyard of the address contained outdoor chicken coops and a boxed-in ring where fights could be staged, the newspaper said.

Hormones and syringes were retrieved by deputies, investigators saying fighting birds are commonly injected with hormones to increase their aggressiveness.
