PHOENIX, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Arizona was doused with heavy rains but not before a dust storm lowered vision throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area, meteorologists said.

The dust cloud appeared Thursday evening and moved from the desert and settled over Phoenix's downtown area.

The National Weather Service had issued a blowing dust alert until 7 p.m. and advised drivers caught in the dust to pull over and turn off vehicle lights, as visibility was reduced in some areas to one-quarter of a mile.

After the dust storm, parts of Phoenix received up to 2 inches of rain during a 1-hour rain.
