Trustee sues family of 'Hep C' doctor

CARSON CITY, Nev., Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A bankruptcy trustee for the estate of a Nevada doctor charged with murder for infecting patients with hepatitis C has sued his family for $16.5 million.

Trustee William A. Leonard Jr. claims the wife and daughters of Dipak Desai have hidden from creditors money from the doctor's practice, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

The trustee charges that in about 2005, Desai transferred about $12.5 million in property to trusts in the names of his daughters, Amishi Desai, Anjali Desai and Avana Bhambri.

In a second suit, Leonard charges Desai's wife, Dr. Kusum Desai, put $3.5 million from the pension plan of her husband's gastroenterology practice into her own business.

Depak Desai and two of his employees are accused of spreading hepatitis C through unhygienic practices, potentially exposing thousands of people to the virus.

Dipak Desai and his former nurses Keith Mathahs and Ronald Lakeman pleaded not guilty last month to charges of second-degree murder in the death of 77-year-old Rodolfo Meana.

Police believe Meana, a patient of Desai, contracted hepatitis C at his clinic. Meana died in April from complications believed to stem from the infection.
