CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona will lead the Pledge of Allegiance on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention, Roll Call confirmed.

A person close to the former congresswoman confirmed her role on Thursday's schedule in Charlotte, N.C., the Washington publication said Wednesday.

Six people died and Giffords was one of 13 people wounded in an assassination attempt Jan. 8, 2011, during her "Congress On Your Corner" event in front of a Tucson grocery store. She resigned earlier this year so she could concentrate on her rehabilitation.
