Group seeks removal of 'sexting' statue

Sept. 5, 2012 at 1:32 PM   |   Comments

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A group offended by a bare-breasted statue in a Kansas arboretum have collected 4,700 signatures to have the courts remove it, lawyers said.

The American Family Association of Kansas and Missouri says the statue in the Overland Park Arboretum in Overland Park, Kan., shows a topless woman taking a picture of herself, which promotes obscenity to children, the Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported.

The group contends the statue encourages "sexting" -- the practice of sending nude or racy photos by text message -- among teens.

Kansas law states in obscenity cases, once a group obtains the prescribed number of signatures the county court must impanel a grand jury within 60 days to rule on the complaint. The Johnson County court administrator told the Star Tuesday the petition, which contains about 1,000 more signatures than is required to impanel the grand jury, has been sent to elections officials for verification.
